My Interests

This page holds not only what I like to do, but how I do it. I hope it’s helpful for those of you who share the same interests.

Podcasting

I get a ton of e-mails asking how we put together MuggleCast, Imprint, and Smart Mouths. I wish I could answer them all, but everyone has different questions and to answer each I’d have to write a book of a response.

Here are the things I use to podcast:
- Behringer Xenyx X1622 Mixer
- Heil PR-40 microphone, Heil SM2 shock mount, Heil PL2T boom mount
- lots of cables to connect the above items with additional microphones/computers
- Skype, Google Docs, Soundtrack Pro, iTunes, Coda

Please keep in mind that to do your own podcast, you do not NEED most of the things listed above. Here are some cheaper alternatives (we used all of these when we started MuggleCast):

- Microphone: Plantronics DSP-500 (out of stock on most retail websites, but look on eBay or search for another Plantronics headset)
- To record your voice: Audacity, Garageband, or QuickTime
- To edit: Audacity, Garageband
- Info on how to get your podcast online: iTunes Podcast Creator FAQs
- To easily upload your podcast so others can download it: Libsyn

Website management

There’s no greater pleasure than being able to serve large audiences like the ones at MuggleNet and Twilight Source. It’s rewarding knowing what I’m writing is being read by hundreds of thousands of people on a weekly basis. When I’m not posting news, I’m updating each site’s content.

Here are the things I use to get website work complete:
- Apple’s 27 inch iMac
- Apple’s 13 inch MacBook Pro
- an iPhone
- Coda, Transmit, Google Docs, Google Chrome, Photoshop

Photography

I love taking photos. When I travel, one of things I most look forward to is taking photos and then sharing them online.

Here are the things I use to take and edit photos:
- Nikon D40
- iPhoto, Photoshop

Videography

I love shooting video. I regret to say I’ve gotten away from it since High School. I used to be very involved with my school’s television program. But when I do get the opportunity…

Here are the things I use to shoot and edit video:
- Sony HVR-A1U camcorder
- Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, iMovie, YouTube (check out videos I’ve made)

I know this is totally random, but I see that you use Google Chrome. I use it as well, but there is one thing that is driving me crazy. I cannot figure out a way to organize my bookmarks and/or delete them on my mac. I have searched for an answer and it seems like others are having the same problem. Do you know how? Thought I would give it a try :-)

  2. Andy says:

They actually just released a new version of Google Chrome today, and it includes a bookmark manager! They’re not pushing the update to current users for another day or two, so you can download it immediately at chrome.google.com!

Thanks so much for the info! PS Love your blog and Imprint!

  4. Deven says:

Sweetie, traveling only has one L. <3

  5. Joey says:

You should put amazon affiliate links for the items you list =)

  6. Susie says:

I noticed that you’re a drummer now (I had no clue! I am a regular listener to Mugglecast and Smartmouths) and was wondering who are your influences. I personally think Ringo Starr is the greatest drummer there is (Im a rabid fan of the Beatles so I’m partial to Ringo)
BTW I work at a Chick fil A in Florida and their food is awesome :)

  7. Katherine says:

uh, you say you like traveling? think you could fly out to France every wednesday for band practice?

  8. D.L says:

Do you know of any high quality video cameras slightly less expensive than the one you use?

  9. Zac says:

Hey, this is awesome, thanks for posting.
What kind of headset do you and Matt (or the other hosts) use now? I’m currently using a very bad quality headset, and frankly its driving me crazy…

This info is very helpful, I like to type, but this is something i just got into after i graduated high school. How do you actually do Podcasting anyways???

  11. Andy says:

Deven, are you sure it only has one l? I looked it up and it looks like it’s spelled both ways!

Susie, I wanna come visit your Chick Fil A this summer! haha

Katherine, that’s a little too far.. sorry :P

DL, Flip cams are great – http://www.theflip.com/en-us/ especially their HD ones

Zac, we use the equipment I listed above. But pick up a Plantronics one.. you can’t go wrong with those.

Amy, there’s no easy answer for how we actually “do podcasting”.. but maybe one day I’ll make a how to video or write up a more detailed post!

  12. Pia says:

    @Deven and @Andy
It can be spelled both ways, one is English (travelling) and one is American (traveling)
( ; – And love the new addition to the site ..

  13. Catherine says:

I think a photo of baby Andy playing the clarinet is necessary! Also do people actually call you Andy or do you say it to take the piss? No offence intended, just wondering!

  14. Char says:

Google Chrome, ick. Have you ever tried Opera?
