Apple’s Tablet – predictions

January 26th, 2010 by Andy Leave a reply »

Because I am a (proud) nerd, please find my Apple Tablet predictions below. This is based off of David Weiss’s Prediction Score Card.

Steve Jobs will be formally announcing the Tablet and all of its features tomorrow, January 27th starting at 10 AM PT. I’m very excited to see what they’ve come up with. And to pre-order it.

After they announce it, you all should come back here and admire how right I was about (mostly) everything.

- Tablet announcement: Yes
- Table price: $600 – $800 WITH a data plan.
- Table screen size: 10 inches
- Cell Phone Internet Capability: Yes (let’s hope Verizon)
- Tablet SDK: No – they’ll use the iPhone’s
- Tablet apps only from App Store: Yes
- Tablet runs existing iPhone apps: Yes
- Tablet OS is a new OS: Yes
- Book, Newspaper, Magazine content: Yes
- Video, Music, TV: Absolutely
- Built-in camera: Yes
- Tactile Keyboard (emits a physical response when pressing keys): Yes
- Supports Flash: Yes
- Tablet ships: March 2010
- The name: Either iSlate or iPad. I’m leaning more towards iSlate.

Additionally at the event tomorrow:
- iPhone 4.0 announcement: Yes
- iLife/iWork updates: Yes

By the way, if you feel so inclined to comment on this post, you’ll notice that there’s a new captcha box on the form (you type in letters to verify you’re not a robot). This is to prevent spam, which I was getting a crap load of.

  1. Completely disagree with your prediction on the Tablet SDK being the same as the iPhone SDK. That’d just be completely clumsy and idiotic on a tablet sized (in your prediction, 10″) computer. And Apple doesn’t like clumsy and idiotic, so I predict not. If so, then I will be greatly let down by this announcement, as I feel they could do SO much better. I do, however, feel that it will have the capability to run certain existing iPhone Apps, but honestly I don’t know how that’d work out.

I think the tablet OS will be simply the iPhone OS

  3. Soragon says:

Oh please don’t say it’ll be called iSlate. That’s a terrible name. So is iTablet, iPad and all those names. Can’t we just call it the “Tablet”? Or “Palette”?

  4. Leigh says:

Andrew, I find your excitement about the apple tablet to be adorable.

  5. TomTheNinja says:

I’m thinking it’ll be called the MacBook Slate. It rollsoff the tongue easier than iSlate.

  6. Khephran says:

I really hope that this thing is good. And hopefully the Tablet OS is not Mac OS…. If it has good features i will definitely buy it, do you think it will have a drawing program?

  7. Sophia says:

Everything looks good although I don’t really want a tactile keyboard. They drive me crazy–I feel like I have to press too hard. I have a Dell XPS that has really light keyboard keys which I barely have to press. I don’t think keys on a smooth screen should be harder to press than a physical keyboard’s keys. Of course, if anyone can do it right, I bet Apple could.

Although I’m leaning with you towards the new OS, I really wish they would come out with something that I could use all my familiar programs on like Adobe and Office.

Anyway – still excited! Can’t way to see the new tablet!

  8. Alex says:

It sounds like it’s going to be amazing but I probably won’t be getting anything like for years :( Seriously, how do you afford all these apple things Andrew??! It’s like every new apple thing that comes out you get and yet the only apple thing I own is an iPod and it’s the only one I’ve ever owned! Where do you get all this money?!

  9. Cal says:

As excited as I am to see the tablet I really hope Apple announces a refresh for the MBP with an i5 processor, I really need one.
It’ll also be interesting to see how much the tablets OS will resemble both OSX and iPhone 4.0

  10. Rina says:

just thought you might want to know, kevin rose (founder of digg.com) posted a 45 sec preview of a tablet he got somehow on his twitter!!

  11. Jesse says:

I’m so excited for this!! I’m buying my first mac (15′ pro) on Friday and can’t wait for that either but I am most likely goin to order a tablet tomorrow too!

  12. Mel823 says:

What’s the point of having an iPhone if the tablet can take pictures and make phone calls as well?

  13. Andy says:

    Thanks everyone for your feedback!

re: Mel823 – the tablet likely won’t be able to make phone calls (just data download for the internet)

re: switchkosterice – maybe I phrased it wrong. I just meant that the SDK would be a part of the iPhone SDK software. Meaning when you go to File – New you pick which one you’re developing for. If they went that way, it wouldn’t surprise me if they included a “convert for Tablet/iPhone” button to get the app working on both. But who knows!

  14. Hayley says:

10:30AM – “What’s the battery life on this remarkable device?” Pauses. “We’ve been able to achieve 10 hours of battery life.” Big applause.

10:29AM – “All the usual suspects: accelerometer, compass, speaker, mic, dock connector. And it’s got battery.”

10:29AM – “iPad is powered by our own custom silicon. Our own chip. It’s called the A4, and it screams.” 1GHz. 16, 32, or 64GB of flash storage. “It’s got the latest in wireless: 802.11n, WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.”

    9.7 inches. this is amazing.

  15. Hayley says:

10:36AM “We rewrote all of our apps for this display. the iPhone SDK supports development for this now… and we’re releasing it today.”

    hahh, right again andrew

  16. Hayley says:

srry for the comment spam but OMG! $499?!?!?! WHAAATTTT?!

  17. Sophia says:

It was iphone os :( and only goes up to 64 GBS.

I really wanted something that I could use as a full-fledged laptop. O-well.

  18. Khephran says:

Well it certainly looks cool, i wish they would at least have Adobe flash
