Comments on: Take it easy on Twilight

Andrew, with all due respect, do you know why people hate on Twilight?

1. The fans tend to be off-the-wall crazy obsessed with it.

2. A lot of fans aren’t really fans at all. They sit through the movie and drool over the main characters and shaking in wet excitement when they take their shirts off.

3. EVERYONE keeps comparing it to Harry Potter and they are NOTHING alike.

4. It’s not very well written, full of cliches, and obviously Stephenie Meyer doesn’t own a thesaurus (much to her chagrin? Doubt it.)

5. A lot of the book is NOTHING but talking about either how perfect Edward is or how much she loves him. Action seems to have been thrown in as an afterthought.

6. When asked about the merits of their book, it’s either how HAWT the characters are or….. well, no, that’s pretty much the extent of their argument.

I’ll admit, Andrew. There are some people who actually like the series for what it is: simple one dimensional entertainment. While I don’t HATE Twilight, exactly, I don’t understand what makes it so popular, popular enough that Stephenie Meyer could be compared to our beloved Jo Rowling.

Thought I’d let you know what it is that makes some people hate Twilight. Myself, I don’t like the series all that much, but as for other people, they can do what they like with their money.

There are people who hate Twilight because of its popularity, but most ‘haters’ dislike Twilight because it is badly written, has very little plot and no character development. It is not the worst series/book on the market, but it does not deserve the popularity it has recieved. I would much rather see a good book, like the Hunger Games or the Uglies series be so popular as they are excellant books. Twilight is a good book to read when you’ve had a long day and want to read a bit of fluff (you know what I mean, like Meg Cabot or some other ‘chick-lit’) but it’s not a book that has depth, or meaning. It’s just fluff.

To Trillian and Nia;I absolutely agree.
I just thing the book series is badly written and has earned way too much praise and publicity in comparison to the quality of writing.Also the fact that it is considered to be better than series’s such as Harry Potter really gets to me.The other issue for me is that I am 16 years old and my 21 year old sister begged me to come and watch New Moon with her because all of her friends were ‘busy’. Outside the cinema hall there was an extremely large crowd of girls giggling and screaming and sighing ‘Edward’, and I just wanted to run for my life then and there. It got worse when my sister joined these fan girls. I Me being in high school am particularly sick of these fan girls, not because they are fans of Twilight, but how they are a bit over the top lovey-dovey and obsessive of a certain fictional character (it is a hundred times worse than the obsession over Mr Darcy). I really don’t care if someone likes the series or not, just don’t try and convince me that it is actually good and I won’t enforce my opinions on you!

I’m a Twilight fan but ashamed of it. It isn’t because of the haters. It’s because of the fans. Come on Andrew can’t you see how ridiculous they are?! When I first started reading Twilight (back in 2005 like Elysa) there were no teams. There weren’t even teams when New Moon the book was released. The haters main problem is the braindead zombie fangirls obsessing over two guys who aren’t even that hot! (I’m a girl and straight and I don’t think either Robert Pattinson or Taylor Lautner are hot). So it is how these fangirls have degraded and disgraced this fandom which has led me to become a Twilight hater. I still like the books and the movies but I will NEVER be associated with those fangirls.

I agree with Emily on this one. Andrew, I think you’re awesome, and I don’t think you’re stupid or crazy for liking Twilight, but see it from the other perspective.

Most people who dislike (or even hate) Twilight dislike it because they think it’s just a bad book series. I’m in this category. I read the first book, thought it read like fanfiction, but kept reading because I was told it got better. It only seemed to get worse. I stopped after Eclipse, because when Breaking Dawn leaked online, I was shown excerpts and it was worse than *bad* fanfiction. It was laughable, and Stephenie Meyer’s explanations made my science-loving brain hurt. I was sure the fans would hate it. A lot of them did (most thought it was a joke at first, a fake made to divert people from real leaks). But most seem to have gobbled it up as usual. Now I would love to just be done with this series and never have to think of it again. But that’s apparently impossible.

I don’t think you fans realize how irritating it is to have Twilight shoved down our throats everywhere we go. Stores have giant posters of Bella and Edward, shirts with silly Twilight slogans, etc. Book stores are jam-packed with Twilight books, pushing aside books we think are of good quality. Can you see why this would be annoying after a while? Especially when we think it’s such a bad book series?

After all the Twilight being bashed on my head from the news, the book stores, the other shops, the internet, the fans, and even my safe haven of the Harry Potter fandom (on occasion), it just gets to the point where I want to scream at someone whenever I see the word “Twilight”.

I’m pretty sure that’s why all the Mugglenet readers who hate Twilight get vicious when Twilight or Stephenie Meyer is mentioned on Mugglenet or Mugglecast. We want to escape all the Twilight, and there it is, in our own fandom, and we unhinge for a moment.

Peel off the PR and the fact is the books are badly written. As “New Moon” proves all too well, nothing happens in the movies. The characters are caricatures, with Bella Swan as a nightmare needy girlfriend, Edward Cullen a total cold fish and Jacob Black as an alluring but emotionally insecure werewolf. There’s pointless plodding for plot. This isn’t even soap opera — it’s just suds with no opera.

“Twi-hards” are so oblivious. The books are terrible, the movie wasn’t any better. It was probably one of the worst movies i’ve ever seen, it severely lacked quality and barely made up for it in attractive actors.

The only reason these movies are successful is that the teenage crowd have unfortunately been exposed to shitty movies and the fact that people consider these movies to be watchable is pretty sad. Face it, if they had ugly actors playing the leads, it wouldnt be anywhere near as successful.

That is why Harry Potter is a whole lot more realistic than the Twilight Saga. If you love a girl, you don’t spend most of your time staring at and stalking her, and one of the best ways to turn off your man is being mean to everyone else around you. Werewolves standing around half naked just to show off their abs is ridiculous. Harry Potter understands this, and if any of the above does happen to any Potter character, they face scorn and ridicule.

Fanfiction shouldnt me made into movies. Simple

There I let go all my opinions in one post.( I used Harry Potter because everyone here was comparing it to it.)

This is sooooo true! Even if they comment aaaall the time how stupid B/E and Twilight and everything else is, we would never change our minds about it.

We – and I will speak for all Twilight Fans – would never write stupid shit on Hanna Montana or Jonas Brothers Fansites… just because why should we? They are fans, let them be fans, let us be fans and shut up, nobody will listen.

They hate Twilight because of the fandom… if they would read it, they would love it the same as we do, and that’s what they fear about! It’s just because everyone talks about…
