I totally agree. Haters make no difference. If they really want to vent, it’s called a journal. XD

    Can’t wait!!! :)

  2. Tanvi says:

    Pretty much summed it up.
I especially hate it when Harry Potter fans actually start to grill fans for being traitors – I mean, I’m a Harry Potter fan, and avid one, since a decade – and I get to hear how I’m betraying the fandom by being a Twilight fan as well.

  3. Heather D says:

I agree. I don’t know if you remember but a few months back you read my email on Imprint about the Twilight hate going around. I too notice that people who don’t like Twilight talk about it more than those of us who do like it. I try to ignore it but sometimes it hurts my feeling because it’s something I love. We all know how sad it is when someone tries to ban our beloved Harry Potter. That hurts. Those people need to remember that.

  4. John T says:

All we need is you crying in front of a curtain to Leave Robert Pattinson Alone now. You’d be a great Chris Crocker.

  5. Shobi says:

Mr Sims…your brilliant..hahahah i TOTALLY agree..i mean why do people always have a problem with something majorly popular that THEY dont particular take a liking too…i mean its pathetic is what it is..

  6. Asdfghjkl says:

Personally I don’t like Twilight (and yes, I have read through the series), but you do make a very good point about how bitch-crazy haters are. It’s something popular that you don’t like. So what? Soda’s popular, and I hate it. That doesn’t mean I go complaining and bitching about how popular it is. Geeze.

Also, your doctor analogy is win.

  7. Reese says:

Absolutely. What I find ever more infuriating is how those people seem to actively search out places where, surprise, a bunch of twilight fans will be such as the trailer page on youtube. Why are you here? I put those people in the same category as people who suddenly dislike a band just because they gain popularity.

  8. carina says:

yup, you truly just said it all. We DONT CARE you dont like Twilight. Its really a waste of their time to judge us for what we enjoy watching and reading, were not out there publicly stating all the things we hate about your likings are we? no? okay so back off :D so thanks Andrew for letting them know that we dont care if they pee twice or not.

  9. vanesa says:

i completely agree, and @Tanvi- you’re so right!! i hate when they compare both series, as if you couldn’t enjoy both of them for what they are.
BTW Andrew… love the pee reference!!
    hahaha… twi-haters= pee !! LOL

  10. JD says:

nice blog …. i heard the movie is awesome too! xP im excited to see it and jealous of all you going to the premiere…

  11. DCC Ash says:

Thank you! I, like Tanvi have been an HP fan since before some of these people knew how to read, those books are in my blood! But I also have found twilight which reaches me for a different reason. Thanks for asking people to lay off, you’re a great example Andrew because you enjoy both and since you’re in the spotlight others can see you balance both loves :-)

  12. Cheryl says:

Well said. It is very sad when people feel a need to criticize others for the BOOKS they read and the movies they see. Any book or movie that can create this kind of fun and excitement should be encouraged. There is nothing stupid about getting together to enjoy something wholesome with friends, family and other fans.

  13. Anna says:

I’m not a huge Twilight fan, and to be fair, almost every single fan of Twilight that I’ve met and has found out that has skitzed and gone off their rocker because “how could I not like Twilight, it is the greatest series ever, etc”.
Two sides to the haters. Theres the people who hate on Twilight and the Twilighters who hate on those who don’t like Twilight.

  14. Maggie says:

I love this! it is so true! thanks for putting that into words :)

  15. Holly says:

Yeah it’s definitely the popularity that makes everyone hate it. And all the crazed little fan girls. I did manage to talk my boyfriend into reading the first one. Now he’s halfway through New Moon and is just going to skip to Breaking Dawn b/c he looked everything up on Wikipedia anyways. =(

  16. Mayra says:

    Ahh… I love you(:
    Speaking for the fans!
    Thank you<333

  17. khephran says:

i am disappointed at the comparison between twilight and Harry Potter i don’t hate twilight but the level of obsession over twilight appears to have some people saying that it is as good if not better than the Harry Potter books. I believe a person, like andrew, can like both books but when people begin to compare them,( there is no way twilight is ever going to become more popular that harry potter so stop) i become annoyed. i hope that any imprint and twilight fans can still enjoy this popular series, i don’t want people to stop liking it, i would just prefer that the movies come out and then people can settle down. sorry for the rant but i don’t want to come across as a twilight hater but merely some one who fails to understand the entertainment of a vampire love saga.

  18. Vicky says:

You have made a really good point here, and I agree. I have to admit I’m not really a fan of Twilight, but I have no problem with it, and I’m not going to be a ‘hater’ of it. It’s like with Harry Potter (me being a massive HP fan), I still get people slagging it off all the time, and because most people like Twilight, I’m scared to admit I like HP, because I get soo much greif for it. Why can’t people just leave these things alone??

  19. Lauren says:

I completely agree with this. Its so frustrating when people hate something purely because other people like it. I don’t understand that mentality. I am so sick of all the judgement and the hate over something that I enjoy and something that makes me feel good. Thanks Andrew, you kick ass:)

  20. Kate says:

The only problem I have with the Twilight/Harry Potter debate is when people say Twilight is better because it’s A.) written better or is B.) more romantic. That just gives all Twilight fans a bad rep because it makes them seem like idiots. To quote a Twilight fan on why Twilight is better than Harry Potter: “It’s better because it’s real.”
I don’t know about that, but it sure makes them sound like a collective group of idiots. Twilight and Harry Potter are so different that it’s shame that they get compared so often. Harry Potter is a very well-written and deeply intellectual series whereas Twilight isn’t terribly profound nor does it have the complexity and thus cannot be fairly compared to a different series of a higher caliber. Think of it like this: Twilight is extremely simplistic, maybe even shallow at times. It’s good for a quick, fun read if you don’t care about “literary value”, you just want something entertaining to read. Harry Potter sparks debates about moral issues and emotion, and is a more “serious” read.

  21. Kelli says:

I feel like I’m in the minority here, and I fully agree with Kate on this issue. I read the entire Twilight series because I figured it couldn’t hurt to be clued in to the latest trend. I gave it a chance and it was fun and harmlessly fluffy until I spoke to a few hardcore fans and they tried bashing me over the head with their insanity.

I don’t hate the popularity because I understand why it’s popular. I’m not a particular fan of the Twilighters who can’t handle the sheer idea that maybe, the universe doesn’t revolve around their fandom and their vampires.

  22. Polly says:

Sorry, but I’m not a big Twilight fan. I have read the books, and I liked them, I only think they’re not good enough for all the hype they get. But whatever. I don’t go out of my way to hate it on it, because like someone pointed out, it does hurt when people bash on the things I like. Just like it hurts whenever Harry Potter stuff gets pulled off the shelves at Hot Topic after just 2 months, but there is Twilight stuff available year round :-(
Either way, Kudos to you, Andrew for defending what you believe in. I respect that

  23. Monica says:

    Well said, Andrew!

What astounds me is that these so-called Twilight Haters actually spend their free time creating facebook groups like this:

    http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=wall&ref=mf&gid=138725135054

Surely if they hated it that much they would channel their energy into something they actually enjoyed?

I think some people get a bit of a kick out of hating on objects of pop culture. It makes them “different”. :|

  24. Rose says:

Amen, Andrew! I know I was upset on one of your posts on MuggleNet where you mentioned Twilight, and everyone was being really nasty in the comments! :( I get that some people just don’t like it, and that’s fine, but don’t hate it and the people who like it!

  25. Mel823 says:

@Kate Why should it bother you so much? If that’s someone’s opinion, then that’s their opinion. In my opinion, HP and Twilight are both fun reads and there’s nothing deep or serious about either one of them.

  26. Mel823 says:

Oh and another thing, 98% of the people hating are going to go see it anyway.

  27. Esther says:

I respect you for being a fairly sane Twilight fan, and I can even listen to Imprint because of it, but here’s the thing: There are the people that are batshit insane, and sadly that minority is the most vocal. Compare it to the H/Hr shippers in Harry Potter. There were the crazies, and there were the perfectly reasonable people who recognized that it was, in fact, not happening. This is why, for me, the fans are the main reason I can’t take this series seriously.
P.S. I HAVE read the books though. I just find them extremely amusing, and not and omg epic romance

  28. Kayceness says:

i dont blame twilight haters… im a huge twifan but its tooo over the top. :(

  29. Emily says:

This is exactly why we anti-Twilighters always speak out. We don’t only hate it because it’s popular, we hate it for a multitude of reasons. Twilight fans just ignore the other reasons why we hate it and go around saying that we’re either jealous or bitter. We’re not.

Most of us hate it because of the purple prose, the bad grammar, the cardboard-cutout characters, the lack of foreshadowing, the lack of any original plot, the lack of research, and the lack of logic.

For instance, Meyer uses words like “scintillating,” “incandescent”, and “verbose” in ways that don’t make sense in the context. Rosalie was able to live a comfortable life during the Great Depression because her father was a banker, even though the banks failing caused the Great Depression. There are loads of plot holes that everyone ignores, and Meyer’s “scientific explanation” for how Bella can get pregnant doesn’t make sense at all. I understand Twilight is fantasy, but Meyer gave it a “real world” explanation, not a fantastic one.

I really don’t care that anyone likes Twilight. It’s just when people get upset with me for saying that I don’t like it, or they accuse me of only liking it because of it’s popularity, that makes me want to speak out. Yes, most of us wouldn’t care if these books weren’t so popular. It’s just ridiculous to us that books with so many errors could have been published and gotten so popular.

I would really like to have a polite discussion with a Twilight fan without them going insane. I don’t mind that people like Twilight. I’m glad they found something they enjoy so much, and at least people are reading. I just can’t stand it when fans talk about how well-written it is and ignore evidence to the contrary.

I also find it annoying when people call us “haters.” We don’t hate Twilight just because it’s cool, we have logical, well-reasoned explanations.

I’m sorry, I don’t mean to offend anyone with my opinions at all. They’re just opinions. I don’t go out of my way to tell everyone how much I hate it. I just defend my beliefs like you’re doing. I’m sure we have more in common than we have differences. I can understand why people like the huge epic romance Twilight is supposed to be, even though I don’t think it is. We will keep talking about how bad we think Twilight is as long as you guys keep talking about how good you think it is, but I don’t think anyone should be insulting anyone else’s tastes. I would be upset it someone kept telling me that Harry Potter sucks, but I wouldn’t call them a hater. I would ask them why and then politely defend my beliefs.

And I’ve read all of the books.

  30. Emily says:

Also, I think you’re awesome, Andrew, but us anti-Twilighters who actually have reasons for disliking Twilight besides it being popular would like to be acknowledged for once. So, … yeah. All right?

I’m sorry that you got rude comments. :(

  31. Fr34k says:

This is sooooo true! Even if they comment aaaall the time how stupid B/E and Twilight and everything else is, we would never change our minds about it.

We – and I will speak for all Twilight Fans – would never write stupid shit on Hanna Montana or Jonas Brothers Fansites… just because why should we? They are fans, let them be fans, let us be fans and shut up, nobody will listen.

They hate Twilight because of the fandom… if they would read it, they would love it the same as we do, and that’s what they fear about! It’s just because everyone talks about…

CiAO Fr34k, greetings from germany, thank you very much!

  32. Jacob says:

Peel off the PR and the fact is the books are badly written. As “New Moon” proves all too well, nothing happens in the movies. The characters are caricatures, with Bella Swan as a nightmare needy girlfriend, Edward Cullen a total cold fish and Jacob Black as an alluring but emotionally insecure werewolf. There’s pointless plodding for plot. This isn’t even soap opera — it’s just suds with no opera.

“Twi-hards” are so oblivious. The books are terrible, the movie wasn’t any better. It was probably one of the worst movies i’ve ever seen, it severely lacked quality and barely made up for it in attractive actors.

The only reason these movies are successful is that the teenage crowd have unfortunately been exposed to shitty movies and the fact that people consider these movies to be watchable is pretty sad. Face it, if they had ugly actors playing the leads, it wouldnt be anywhere near as successful.

That is why Harry Potter is a whole lot more realistic than the Twilight Saga. If you love a girl, you don’t spend most of your time staring at and stalking her, and one of the best ways to turn off your man is being mean to everyone else around you. Werewolves standing around half naked just to show off their abs is ridiculous. Harry Potter understands this, and if any of the above does happen to any Potter character, they face scorn and ridicule.

Fanfiction shouldnt me made into movies. Simple

There I let go all my opinions in one post.( I used Harry Potter because everyone here was comparing it to it.)

  33. Trillian says:

I agree with Emily on this one. Andrew, I think you’re awesome, and I don’t think you’re stupid or crazy for liking Twilight, but see it from the other perspective.

Most people who dislike (or even hate) Twilight dislike it because they think it’s just a bad book series. I’m in this category. I read the first book, thought it read like fanfiction, but kept reading because I was told it got better. It only seemed to get worse. I stopped after Eclipse, because when Breaking Dawn leaked online, I was shown excerpts and it was worse than *bad* fanfiction. It was laughable, and Stephenie Meyer’s explanations made my science-loving brain hurt. I was sure the fans would hate it. A lot of them did (most thought it was a joke at first, a fake made to divert people from real leaks). But most seem to have gobbled it up as usual. Now I would love to just be done with this series and never have to think of it again. But that’s apparently impossible.

I don’t think you fans realize how irritating it is to have Twilight shoved down our throats everywhere we go. Stores have giant posters of Bella and Edward, shirts with silly Twilight slogans, etc. Book stores are jam-packed with Twilight books, pushing aside books we think are of good quality. Can you see why this would be annoying after a while? Especially when we think it’s such a bad book series?

After all the Twilight being bashed on my head from the news, the book stores, the other shops, the internet, the fans, and even my safe haven of the Harry Potter fandom (on occasion), it just gets to the point where I want to scream at someone whenever I see the word “Twilight”.

I’m pretty sure that’s why all the Mugglenet readers who hate Twilight get vicious when Twilight or Stephenie Meyer is mentioned on Mugglenet or Mugglecast. We want to escape all the Twilight, and there it is, in our own fandom, and we unhinge for a moment.

  34. Jacob says:

Trillian, I completely agree with you.

  35. Nia says:

I’m a Twilight fan but ashamed of it. It isn’t because of the haters. It’s because of the fans. Come on Andrew can’t you see how ridiculous they are?! When I first started reading Twilight (back in 2005 like Elysa) there were no teams. There weren’t even teams when New Moon the book was released. The haters main problem is the braindead zombie fangirls obsessing over two guys who aren’t even that hot! (I’m a girl and straight and I don’t think either Robert Pattinson or Taylor Lautner are hot). So it is how these fangirls have degraded and disgraced this fandom which has led me to become a Twilight hater. I still like the books and the movies but I will NEVER be associated with those fangirls.

  36. Misty says:

To Trillian and Nia;I absolutely agree.
I just thing the book series is badly written and has earned way too much praise and publicity in comparison to the quality of writing. Also the fact that it is considered to be better than series’s such as Harry Potter really gets to me.The other issue for me is that I am 16 years old and my 21 year old sister begged me to come and watch New Moon with her because all of her friends were ‘busy’. Outside the cinema hall there was an extremely large crowd of girls giggling and screaming and sighing ‘Edward’, and I just wanted to run for my life then and there. It got worse when my sister joined these fan girls. I Me being in high school am particularly sick of these fan girls, not because they are fans of Twilight, but how they are a bit over the top lovey-dovey and obsessive of a certain fictional character (it is a hundred times worse than the obsession over Mr Darcy). I really don’t care if someone likes the series or not, just don’t try and convince me that it is actually good and I won’t enforce my opinions on you!

  37. Niamh says:

There are people who hate Twilight because of its popularity, but most ‘haters’ dislike Twilight because it is badly written, has very little plot and no character development. It is not the worst series/book on the market, but it does not deserve the popularity it has recieved. I would much rather see a good book, like the Hunger Games or the Uglies series be so popular as they are excellant books. Twilight is a good book to read when you’ve had a long day and want to read a bit of fluff (you know what I mean, like Meg Cabot or some other ‘chick-lit’) but it’s not a book that has depth, or meaning. It’s just fluff.

  38. Stefanie says:

I completely agree 100% with Emily, Jacob, Trillian. You have taken every word out of my mouth. Thank you for taking the time to explain this!

  39. Justin says:

Andrew, with all due respect, do you know why people hate on Twilight?

    1. The fans tend to be off-the-wall crazy obsessed with it.

    2. A lot of fans aren’t really fans at all. They sit through the movie and drool over the main characters and shaking in wet excitement when they take their shirts off.

    3. EVERYONE keeps comparing it to Harry Potter and they are NOTHING alike.

    4. It’s not very well written, full of cliches, and obviously Stephenie Meyer doesn’t own a thesaurus (much to her chagrin? Doubt it.)

    5. A lot of the book is NOTHING but talking about either how perfect Edward is or how much she loves him. Action seems to have been thrown in as an afterthought.

    6. When asked about the merits of their book, it’s either how HAWT the characters are or….. well, no, that’s pretty much the extent of their argument.

I’ll admit, Andrew. There are some people who actually like the series for what it is: simple one dimensional entertainment. While I don’t HATE Twilight, exactly, I don’t understand what makes it so popular, popular enough that Stephenie Meyer could be compared to our beloved Jo Rowling.

Thought I’d let you know what it is that makes some people hate Twilight. Myself, I don’t like the series all that much, but as for other people, they can do what they like with their money.

Anyway, keep up the great work on Mugglecast!
